Chile coal imports double in February

Chile imported $97 million worth of coal in February, doubling imports of $47 million in the same month of last year, central bank data showed Tuesday.

The monthly figure also marked an increase of 40.5% from the previous month of January, while imports during the first two months of the year totaled $166 million, up 56.6% from 2016.

Chile relies on coal for around a third of electricity supplies, with Colombia, Australia and the US accounting for the bulk of imports.

The country imported 11 million mt of the fuel last year, up 37% from 2015
